What does it mean if I’m overwhelmed?

We’re entering what is arguably the busiest time of the year — the holiday season. Just in case the daily battle with burnout wasn’t enough, let’s throw in some extra parties, a few family gatherings and buying presents for everyone you know. The overwhelm is really starting to sink in. On top of everything else you have going on in life, you’re now wrestling with feeling overwhelmed and the meaning behind it all. How do you know if you’re dealing with normal feelings of overwhelm or if it’s something more?

Overwhelm, by definition, means “to cover over completely”; “to overpower in thought or feeling” or “to upset, overthrow.” So, what does that mean for those dealing with feelings of overwhelm? If you’re feeling overwhelmed that means you may experience some mental, physical and emotional symptoms, including:

  • Headaches

  • Body aches that present in your shoulder, neck or back

  • Feeling faint or dizzy

  • Increased feelings of tiredness, anxiety or bouts of depression

Meaningful ways to deal with feeling overwhelmed

Those battling the feeling of being overwhelmed are not alone. In fact, most Americans report feeling overwhelmed by stress. There are some practical ways to help you navigate your feelings.

  • Evaluate your life. What’s causing you to feel overwhelmed? What is within your control to change? Once you’ve determined what is causing you to feel overwhelmed, look for ways to change your circumstances.

  • Get creative. Finding a creative outlet can help you place some meaningful distance between you and your overwhelmed feelings. Consider crocheting, sewing, painting, writing or drawing.

  • Meditate. You can also add meaning to your life — and help cope with feelings of overwhelm — by practicing meditation. What this looks like depends on you. Some people use this time to pray, while others use it to think positively about their life and circumstances.

  • Consult a therapist. If you feel like you’ve done everything you can to help with feeling overwhelmed, it may be time to talk to a therapist.
